Hello!!!!

I am Elizabeth McCollum. I am the oldest of two children born to my parents John and Lynne. I have one younger brother, Greg. I was born in Florida about ten miles from the beach. We moved here to Ohio when I was two years old and have lived here ever since. I live in West Chester when I'm not at school and I went to Lakota West (which is way better than East ) High School. I am a Secondary Math major and I chose this because I like helping people learn and I had really good math teachers in high school. In my senior year I took a teaching class, so I have observed in classrooms of every grade level. I have taught lessons in both junior high and high school math classes. I enjoy just being with my friends and having a good time. If I find a good book, I like to read it too. In high school I was a band geek :) The picture above is all the seniors in our section last year (hunter, bob, dana, and me). I work in the CECH Dean's office, so if you have questions about CECH come visit me :) Some interesting facts about me are: I've never broken a bone, and I hate the common Thanksgiving food, mashed potatos.external image IMG_9668%20%282%29.jpg

ISTE Reflection 1

Standard # 1: Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity

Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:

b. engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources

Fulfilling this goal is the main focus of teachers around the world. Students always ask “why do we need to know this?” Being able to answer this question, and show students how topics are relevant makes teachers very effective. In my 7th grade math class we did a vocabulary project in which students were assigned 5 math words to research and define. One aspect of the project was to find a real world example of the term using the school’s internet database. This project allowed students to use digital tools and resources such as computers, Smart Boards, and online tools to learn about their terms and related math topics. In this Computer Tools for Teachers course, we learn about different technological resources available for teachers to make their classrooms more effective. Tools such as Internet access, Databases, Webcams, Power Point presentations, Google Docs presentations, allow teachers to teach in ways that not only exposes students to various technological resources, but also shows them how material relates to the real world. This reduces the amount of time needed to answer the question “why do we need to learn this?” and increases the time available for learning about how school topics relate to the real world.

Standard #3: Model Digital-Age Work and Learning

Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:

d.) model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning

I feel we have done a lot of this in Computer Tools for Teachers. This quarter we have made tests, made rubrics, looked at websites filled with lesson plans, and learned about copyright by watching a power point video. We have also learned about various content materials by using websites during student lesson plans, we have used Microsoft office as a means of gaining valuable teaching resources such as seating charts, and we have searched for Webquests appropriate for our content area. The number of things we have done with technology in Computer Tools for teachers is great. Because we are being introduced to these resources now, we will be able to share them with our students in a few years. Everything we do is helpful. We recently looked at websites about digital citizenship because internet safety is a big problem in schools today. The things we do in this class help us prepare to be fun, exciting teachers. Not the boring teachers that make even the nerdy kids want to skip class. We will be able to use these skills well because we have been exposed to them.

Standard #4: Teachers understand local and global societal issues and responsibilities in an evolving digital culture and exhibit legal and ethical behavior in their professional practices. Teachers:

a.) advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources

I think this is a very important standard for teachers to enforce. Internet safety is always going to be a problem, so teaching students how to stay safe online is very important. In Computer Tools for Teachers we have done several activities to deal with this standard. We made a list of rules for students to follow online so that they stay safe. Some of these rules included: only go to the assigned websites, don’t download anything without teacher permission, avoid websites ending in .com, always cite your sources, and keep a written record of what students worked on to know that they were on task and looking at appropriate sites. We also watched several videos on Copyright and Fair Use. As teachers we will be able to use what we learned from these videos to keep us safe and to model this safety to our students. We will be able to share with them what we learned so that they can be aware of the Copyright and Fair Use rules as well. Next to learning, keeping students safe should be the number one concern for teachers, and using the things we learned in this class, we will all be able to do that well.
